ROOMS with a view to Poas Volcano or the Rio Itikis Valley
Pura Vida Hotel is a colonial style former coffee finca
with a main house (the Casa) and gardens being overlooked by Poas Volcano.
We have 4 free standing Casitas set in a secret garden overlooking
the Rio Itikis valley below. This page is about our rooms and Casitas
but first a digression:
For some more hotel photos take a digression to our Hotel Photo Album
These photos were all taken at Pura Vida in the Casitas, the Casa or the Garden. From early
morning to dusk and then dinner. Please click on the "GLASS WING BUTTERFLY" for the album.
A walk through the garden will find you face to face with
Cana India, Passion Vines, Mano Tigre, Guitite (the Orchid host), Heliconia and
Reina de la Noche among many other
bird and butterfly attracting bushes and trees.
Likely as not you'll also meet many butterflies, a few squirrel, some bats,
lots of geckos as well as hummingbirds, many jiquirros (the national bird),
a passerini tanager or two and maybe a Mot Mot
as you wander in the place we also call home.
After a drive from Cahuita, Montezuma or an internal flight from Drake Bay or Tamarindo
relax on your patio, our terrace or
the garden restaurant. A sip of wine, a euglossine bee floating by,
Tuetal village and the slopes of Poas at sunset - Pura Vida!
We think this is the best place to start or end your journey to Costa Rica.

La Casa Reception Area
Pura Vida was originally a coffee plantation but now the old house or
Casa serves as the restaurant,
the reception and public areas. In reception you will find
perhaps a botanist debating a Sarchi rocking chair, an internet station, TV,
public telephone (always free inside Costa Rica), a small gift area focusing on unique
Pefi ceramics and masks from the indigenous village of Boruca.
"We had a wonderful early morning excursion to Poas Volcano, a
great view of the volcano and
a hike too."
Suzanne and Bruce Degen, San Anselmo, California

The Katydid Casita
Our newest Casita saw its first guest December 2003. With a beautiful garden view
this is our largest casita sleeping 2 to 6 persons.
We have 2 bedrooms each with its own full bathroom,
a pull out double bed in the large
living room, breakfast patio and kitchenette with fridge. This Casita is perfect for
two couples or a larger family. If you bring mother-in-law, she can have her own room.
"Our whole trip in Costa Rica was fully Pura Vida. We snorkeled with dolphins, dived with sharks,
saw manta rays jumping out of the water. . . ".
Paul & Tosca Amsterdam, Holland

The Katydid Casita
Stay over in the Central Valley for a couple of days in your own little house -
what we call a Casita in Costa Rica. This is the Katydid living room
with a beautiful ox cart wheel on the wall decorated in Sarchi - the wood crafts center
of Costa Rica - just 40 minutes from the hotel.
"Besides the food, which was stupendous, we loved our day exploring with our English
speaking driver/guide from the Pura Vida Hotel."
Cathy Sanford, Scotts Valley, California

Betsy in the Pura Vida garden
One of the joys of Costa Rica is the variation in flora and fauna,
The garden is planted with many different fruits and flowering plants.
One visitor is the beautiful electric blue-green euglossine bees
seeking scent in certain special flowers.
"We saw the rainforest in Monteverde, were lucky enough to see Volcan Arenal erupting for
two nights in a row, and came face to face with monkeys in Manuel Antonio, which is a beautiful town."
Steve, Oakland, California, USA

The Mariposa Casita
The Mariposa is also a free standing "bungalow" but this one has a small living room and
2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. This is ideal for two couples or a family
with an older child. Sleeps 1 to 4. This Casita is an "original"
and has not been remodeled in the spirit of "full disclsure"
- both bathrooms are small and there is no view.
"It was just like staying at good friends home with a marvellous dinner and
a great help with all questions and organisation. Nothing is too much for
the owner and helpful staff."

Mariposas (butterflies) live year round in the gardens. Unfortunately our favorite,
the Blue Morpho lives elsewhere in the jungles and parks that we can tell you
all about when you get here.
"As General Manager of The Travel Store
in San Jose, Costa Rica; I had to arrange a meeting

The Volcano Studio
A local artist, Romero, has painted many of the paintings at Pura Vida. This
is his mind's eye view of Arenal volcano. You will find Romero's
art around the hotel - his studio and school
is about 10 minutes from the hotel in La Garita.
"We lived in this country a fantastic aventure with tops as Irazu craters,
Arenal eruptions, Tortuguero animals, Cahuita, and Osa peninsula.

The Secret Garden
The gardens at Pura Vida are often the most welcome surprise -
each Casita is set on its own - surrounded by our secret garden of palms, the giant pink flowering oak,
a huge avocado and many fruits such as mangoes, star fruit and grapefruit.
"Pura Vida Hotel is a portal for adventure in Costa Rica. It is a great first and last night of your
vacation. When you arrive, you can get good information from the people that are finishing their
vacation and flying out."
