Pura Vida Hotel

Welcome to our little corner of paradise!
Pura Vida is the ongoing effort of one simple idea -
"a place we would like to stay ourselves"

Where are we?  (map - HOW TO FIND THE PURA VIDA)
Just 4Km from the international airport, 25 minutes from San Jose, the capital, and right in the middle of the country. We are half way between the Pacific Coast and the Carribean.
Just the place to start your exploration of Costa Rica.
We hope to be your "base camp".

About Pura Vida
Situated in a residential area of the Tuetal Village and surrounded by coffee and sugar cane farms, we are just north of Alajuela and minutes from the Juan Santamaria (San Jose) International Airport. We have a private and secure parking compound. The "Casa" or main house was originally a coffee finca and has been converted into a country Inn with comfortable guest rooms in the main house and our featured free standing Casitas in the garden.

The coffee plantation has evolved into a delightful tropical garden with all kinds of tropical fruit trees including bananas, lemons, mangoes, star fruits, avocados, papaya, grapefruit, carambola, mango, cas, nance and oranges.

We hope to provide you one of the tastiest meals of your trip - your hosts and owners are from California via the UK and Asia. The garden restaurant is for hotel guests and serves a delicious breakfast and very special three course dinners featuring a blend of Costa Rican, French and Asian cuisine, tasty stuff. The Pura Vida Hotel can be the perfect place to start and end your explorations of Costa Rica.

We have also planted and are adding frequently many native species of flowers and plants - particularly those that attract the birds and butterflies. We keep a coffee plant in the Garden Restaurant for the memory of the old finca. The gardens look out over the Tuetal valley, a picturesque setting of coffee plantations and a typical Costa Rican village (Tuetal Norte).

Your Own Casita or a place in the Casa
The property includes 4 individual "Casitas" in the gardens. Each free standing Casita has 1 or two bedrooms and sleeps 1 to 4 people. Each Casita has a private bathroom with hot water and either garden views or views to the Poas Volcano.

We are just 4 km from the international airport, 25 minutes from San Jose, the capital, right in the middle of the country. We are halfway between the Pacific Coast and the Caribbean and just the place to start your exploration of Pura Vida.

If you need transfers or tours anywhere in Costa Rica, visit our own InsightCostaRica here. If you want to find the special places we have excellent English speaking local guides to get you there.

Poas is just 45 minutes by car from the hotel. Other local attractions include the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Zoo Ave (a must visit), La Guacima Butterfly farm and, of course, the local farmers market on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

A Garden Dinner Delight
The gardens and Casitas are very private - and an ideal setting for gourmet dinners or small meetings. Parking is within the compound and completely secure.

For our signature prix fixe dinners, we only serve what we can buy today fresh today, so make a reservation early. For more information about our special dinners check out our food page here.

Make Pura Vida the perfect place to start and end your explorations of Costa Rica.

A VERY GOOD MAP
If this is going to be your first (second, third, fourteenth) trip to Costa Rica, you will need a really good map and a good guide book. One of our favorite maps is - A Travelers Reference Map of Costa Rica from International Travel Maps They have a waterproof one designed JUST for us (those that live in the beautiful tropics). Also Toucan Maps has an excellent new map out (also waterproof).

A COUPLE OF GOOD GUIDE BOOKS
One of our favorite guide books thanks to its wonderful detail including city maps of such fascinatingly unmapped places such as our own Alajuela (and even little Sarchi) is the Moon Handbook of Costa Rica written by Christopher Baker The Moon Guide ALSO Beatrice Blake thinks about conservation as much as she thinks about the traveller in Costa Rica. This guide book is an easy read and has lots of unique material. Get involved here: The New Key to Costa Rica
